PROPERTIES OF FREE-CUTTING STEELS
Machinability is the main property of all free-cutting steels. It means that they are suitable to be machined with shaving removal at the maximum possible speed ensuring the least tool wear, the absolute compliance with dimensional standards and the optimal surface finish of the piece.
This is accomplished by means of maximum addition of Sulphur (and in some cases of Lead as well), that enable the steel to fragment the shaving and lubricate the tool. Such a situation naturally goes to the detriment of the mechanical properties: it is precisely for this reason that free-cutting steels are employed for large mass components which are subject to low stress and not to fatigue tests.
